Xavier Dunn to lead Port Macquarie Sharks out in match with Port City Breakers
Today PaperCommentYour SayOpinionSend a Letter to the EditorXAVIER Dunn will lead the Port Macquarie Sharks on to Regional Stadium for their season opener against the Port City Breakers. The junior Shark will also hand the players their jerseys before kick off, but there are many subplots to this season opener. First it's a local derby, secondly the appearance of Xavier and his family will spur the Sharks on and then there is the story of the Sharks' Tom Maguire. Maguire's daughter Lyla was diagnosed last week with congenital myasthenic syndrome, an inherited neuromuscular disorder which affects less than 10 people in Australia. Sharks coach Joe Cudmore said the plight of the Dunn's along with the Maguire's made them appreciate footy was just a game https://www.wholesalejerseysweb.com , but it did add more meaning to Saturday's match. "Magsy can't play because of his daughter Lyla being down at John Hunter and Xavier touched us all last year," he said. "We raised a lot of money for him so it will hit home once we get in the sheds and realise how lucky we really are as footballers that some blokes that love the game so much probably can't play as much as they want to. "At the end of the day it is just a game and being a new father myself, things like this really hit home because you don't really care about footy or results because when it comes to your kids Cheap nfl jerseys , you just want to get home safe and give them a cuddle. "For Xavier it's going to be a great day for him; the boys' can't wait for him to lead us out and give us our jerseys on the weekend especially for a junior Shark like that. That's our role we look after our own." Xavier's father Simon said it would be an experience his young bloke wouldn't forget. "He's probably a bit too young at the moment to realise exactly what's going on, but in years to come he'll look back and realise how special it was because he's just footy mad," he said. "It's been a hard time for us all, but we just want to thank the wider community for their help over the last nine months because we really do live in a special community." On the field Cudmore was looking forward to getting competitive results after a four week break from their last match. "It finally gives you a bit of relief that you can get some reward on the weekends as opposed to training Tuesday Thursday and meeting back the following Tuesday so it'll be good to get back out there," he said. "I don't think it's a bad thing we haven't played in a few weeks, but we have been doing a lot of ballwork so I have drawn some confidence out of watching the boys train because they've clicked pretty quickly. The boys are revved up for it and you don't have to get them up for this occasion so that's the easy part." "In game situations they haven't been put under pressure since the Newcastle game a month ago so time will tell but I'm not stressing too hard. I know the boys and I know the 13 I pick don't like losing at all." Cudmore expected Breakers' co captain Dan Dumas to pose plenty of questions for his defence out wide. "He's been their backbone for a while now and a lot comes from his offloads so we'll try and rectify that, but other than that we don't know what to expect." Breakers coach Digby Murray said the Sharks were the number one side in Australia 12 months ago and expected they would have their work cut out. "They've recruited well and were the best side in the country last year so we know it's going to be tough," he said. Murray also signalled Dumas out as the player to lead an inexperienced Breakers side around the park.
